Huron field hockey edges Country Day, Pioneer tops Mercy to advance to state semifinals and more Wednesday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

On a windy Wednesday night, the Huron High School field hockey team fought off Detroit Country Day for a 1-0 home win to advance to Thursday's MHSFHA state semifinals.

The River Rats (14-2) and the Yellowjackets (7-5-3) picked up right where they left off in their last matchup. Early in the season, Huron edged out a similarly played game and won 1-0 at home.

Country Day was just as stubborn Wednesday, forcing Huron to dig deep and find a way to get that go-ahead-goal.

"This definitely helps prepare us for tomorrow -- little adversity there," said Huron coach Tia Sutton. "We kept shooting. We weren't able to get one in. (It was) very frustrating for the girls."

Finally, with 9 minutes, 32 seconds remaining in regulation, Theresa DiDonato was able to get one past Country Day keeper Amanda Tatt thanks to -- what Sutton called -- a beautiful setup by Taylor Standiford.

Sutton credits the shutout to her entire defensive line, led by co-captains Lexi Collins and Anna Masini. Keeper Megan Wesner made six saves.

The River Rats will take on Bloomfield Hills Marian at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Huron High School.
