ROMULUS - The home team was featured in the final game of the fifth annual Holiday Classic Romulus Showcase for a reason. Fans packed the gym at Romulus High School to see the host Eagles take on Huron, last year's Class A state runner up, in what many billed as a Breslin Center preview.
If that proves to be the case, Huron hopes it will get more friendly rolls off of the rims in East Lansing.
The River Rats offense never got in a rhythm as Romulus built an early lead with sharp 3-point shooting and weathered a late Huron run to win 60-47.
Huron (2-1) started the game in a tight 2-3 zone, which effectively shut the Eagles' inside game down in the first quarter. But Romulus got hot from beyond the arc - hitting 4-of-5 attempts from 3-point range - forcing the River Rats to switch it up. But nothing slowed down the Eagles' outside attack.
"They hit threes against our press, they hit threes against our zone, they hit threes against our man," said Huron coach Waleed Samaha. "I was here Tuesday and (Romulus) couldn't hit a shot. Tonight they hit 'em all."
Huron trailed 12-11 after one, and took its only lead of the game on the first play of the second quarter when Kyle Baker threw an alley-oop dunk to Andre Bond, who finished with a team-high 11 points.
Bond's dunk was Huron's only field goal of the quarter, and Romulus answered with an 18-0 run. The River Rats shot just 1-of-11 from the field in the second and 16-of-67 (23.8 percent) on the night.
Romulus, meanwhile stayed hot from downtown, hitting 4-of-6 3-pointers - including three from Eli Robertson - in the second quarter.
