Huron High School had been pressuring Pioneer’s net all game, as the two teams met up at Hollway Field Wednesday. But late into the second half, Huron still hadn’t found a way to put one past Pioneer goalie Emma Hamstra. It wasn’t until the River Rats’ 12th shot at Hamstra’s goal that Huron finally broke through.

With just under nine minutes remaining in the game, Huron’s Taylor Standiford stick handled along the Pioneer end line, then sent a cross straight to the stick of teammate Katie Yeatts, who buried it on her first touch, high to the near post.

The one goal was enough for Huron, as the River Rats hung on to beat Pioneer 1-0, the second time this year that Huron (10-2) had beaten the defending state champion Pioneers (7-2-1) by the same score.

Huron outshot Pioneer 12-1 in the game, and earned 12 corners to Pioneer’s two, but Hamstra, who had five saves on the night, had been handling everything sent her way. Eventually though, the Huron attack was too much to hold off.

A great, fast-paced game. Both teams played well.
