Huron maintained a slim lead throughout Wednesday's boys lacrosse matchup with Lincoln.
In the end, Huron improved to 2-2 overall with a 5-4 victory in a game that Huron coach Greg Monroe called pretty frustrating.
"Throughout the game we had trouble clearing the ball," Monroe said. "We took way too many penalties. So overall, it wasn't a good performance for us. I spoke to the guys after the game, and I told them good teams find a way to play even when they are not playing their best. That is what the guys did tonight."
Nils Urbaniak had two goals for Huron, and Gino Meneghini, Trevor Kuhnlein and Chad Aaronson all scored as well.
Dexter earned a 12-2 non-conference win over Gross Ile on Wednesday, thanks in part to solid performances by Louie Kurcz and Connor Benson.
Juniors Kurcz and Benson scored four goals and three goals, respectively, while Ben Spuller contributed two goals and two assists.
“We’re finding our way,” Dexter coach Brad Skinner said. “We’re getting better each week, playing hardm, getting ground balls, getting back on defense quickly - it’s made a difference the last couple of outings for us.”
Huron tied visiting Chelsea 0-0 on Wednesday.
Huron's Ariel Freed made two saves, and Chelsea’s Krista Pagliarini saved five shots.
“They had a couple of opportunities, but Krista came up with some saves,” Chelsea coach Shawn Hayes said. “We were a little slow and reactive, but managed to disrupt the majority of their attacks.”
Hayley Bunten’s two goals propelled Chelsea to a 3-1 SEC crossover win over Temperance Bedford on Tuesday.
Bunten bookended Chelsea’s three goals, playing her first goal over Bedford goalkeeper Grace Brown’s head after a diagonal cross from Gabi Lantis, and sealed the win on a penalty kick in the second half.
Mackenzie Mykayla scored Chelsea’s second goal, and goalkeeper Krista Pagliarini made two saves.
Girls track and field
In a meet shortened to just 10 events by wet weather conditions, Dexter's girls track team hung on for a 44-34 victory over Tecumseh.
Dexter's Kamie Powell leaped 15 feet, 10 inches to win the long jump. The team also posted wins by Darion Mayrand in the 100-meter dash (13.29 seconds), Elizabeth Greve in the 1,600 run (5:40.57) and Maddie Kurcz in the 400 run (1:03.23).
