Even as the losses piled up this season, Huron High School hockey coach Bill DeGroot continued the refrain: "We've got a title to defend."
Thursday night at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, Huron stubbornly defended last year's regional championship for three periods and an overtime. But Louis Marr knocked in a rebound 13 seconds into the second overtime to give Pioneer a 3-2 win, and end Huron's season in a Division 1 pre-regional.
Pioneer (14-10-1) outshot Huron 33-16, but never led in the game until Marr's sudden-death game-winner.
"I didn't even know what to do," Marr said. "I just started waving my arms, I was so happy."
Pioneer's Zach Reinholt created the scoring chance, whipping a shot on net that caromed off to Marr in front of an empty goalmouth.
"Reinholt did all the work," Marr said. "I just stood back there and the puck popped out to me and I couldn't have asked for an easier way to put the puck in the net."
