Late in the first half of Friday night’s game against Pioneer, Huron High School coach Steve Vinson noticed that his senior center, Kelcy Barott, wasn’t her typical, effective self.
“I just told her, ‘Trust yourself. Settle down. Trust yourself, and let the game come to you’,” said Vinson.
Barott took that pep talk to heart, scoring Huron’s final eight points of the half -- with a layup, a 3-pointer and an old-fashioned three-point play -- and the River Rats took a 34-28 lead into half. Barott's confidence carried through for the rest of the game as she scored 21 points in Huron's 63-48 Southeastern Conference Red Division win at Pioneer.
The win gives Huron (16-4, 15-1 SEC Red) sole ownership of the SEC Red championship for the second year in a row. Pioneer (17-3, 14-2 SEC Red) and Huron had identical league records heading into Friday’s regular season finale.
“I just did what I could to help the team out. Everything I got was because of my teammates," Barott said. "They got me open, they got me the looks I had.”
Barott's night was punctuated during a second-half stretch when she scored 11 straight points over a 2 minute, 40 second span. That extended Huron’s lead to double digits for the first time, 49-38, with 6:45 left in the game.
“That was huge,” said Vinson. “She hit a couple threes. She can do it inside and outside, she’s very diverse. She did a great job.”
