Whenever Huron High School quarterback Josh Jackson was in shotgun formation on Friday night, the look of the Lincoln football team's defensive front would change instantaneously.

That split second delay it took for a shotgun snap to get from the center to Jackson's hands was all the head start the defense needed. After some early sacks, every time Huron went out from under center, it was like dropping blood in the shark's tank.

With their silver helmets shining as they continually sacked Jackson -- 12 times over the course of the game -- it was clear the Lincoln defenders were the sharks.

Led by senior linebacker Bryton Boyle, the Lincoln defense sacked its way to a 35-14 victory over Huron at Riverbank Stadium on Friday to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Boyle contributed five sacks on the night as Lincoln allowed just 30 rushing yards on 31 attempts on the night.

"The way we brought pressure from multiple places was the difference," said Lincoln coach Chris Westfall. "It was a very good design by our defensive staff, but it was also very relentless play out of all those linebackers. They really just played hard."

Offensively, four different players scored Lincoln's five touchdowns, a testament to the depth Westfall is excited about at the skill positions.

"Obviously Tyree (Waller) everybody knows about or is going to know about, Dalauren (Roberson) on the screen showed how explosive he is," Westfall said. Waller caught three passes for 97 yards and a touchdown and Roberson took his only reception of the night 58 yards for a score. "This is probably the deepest skill group that I’ve been around in my twenty years."

Senior running back Will Russell has happily taken to a reduced roll offensively because of the depth and made the most of three carries on Friday with a 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

"When you have the depth that we do, the load is kind of taken off of you," said Russell who also had two sacks on the night defensively. "You kind of play to your game, you feel fresh."

Huron netted just ten total yards and had one first down in the first quarter as Lincoln built an early 14-0 lead off of a pair of Troy Brumfield rushing touchdowns. Brumfield finished with 43 yards on ten carries.

Lincoln’s lead more than doubled to 29-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter. Javin Kilgo found Tyree Waller for a 45-yard touchdown pass 30 seconds into the second quarter, and after a forced fumble on the ensuing Huron possession, Russell scored on the second play of the drive.

Kilgo finished 8-for-13 for 179 yards passing and two touchdowns.

"Early on we dug too deep of a hole and against a team like Lincoln you can't dig those holes. Especially when you got a lot of young kids," said Huron coach Cory Gildersleeve. "The kids came out and battled, and I'm proud of their effort and how they fought til the end."

With 10:27 remaining in the half, Lincoln had a 198-10 advantage in yards gained.

Huron pieced together some offense for the remainder of the half, but an interception in the end zone and missed a 45-yard field goal attempt kept the River Rats (0-2) off of the scoreboard heading into the break.

After a Roberson touchdown put Lincoln up 35-0, a running clock was enacted in the third quarter. Huron scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to close the gap.

Jackson completed 12-of-17 passes for 91 yards.
