The starters for Huron High School's boys and girls basketball teams didn't see much action in the fourth quarter of their respective games at the Riverdome on Friday night.

Both teams enjoyed leads of more than 30 points against Temperance Bedford, so the coaches decided to give their regulars a rest in the Southeastern Conference Red Division games.

Huron girls coach Steve Vinson didn't hesitate to pull DeVonyea Johnson and Charlise Slater in the River Rats' 66-34 victory, waiting just 2 minutes into the third to rest his top scorers against the three-time defending SEC Red champs.

He knows they'll need fresh legs when the River Rats travel to play Inkster -- ranked No. 4 in the latest Associated Press Division 1 poll -- at Dearborn Heights Robichaud's Martin Luther King Jr. Classic on Saturday.

"We've got less than 24 hours to prepare, so they'll need the rest," Vinson said. "I think they got enough work to where they got enough action to improve in some areas, but at the same time we got them rested and we got a lot of minutes for other kids who might have to step up tomorrow."

Huron boys coach Waleed Samaha waited a touch longer to tap the brakes during the 74-53 nightcap, but after his team outscored Bedford 29-13 in the third quarter, including 14 from junior point guard A.J. Mathew, the second teamers came on to put the finishing touches on the Kicking Mules. (Rest of the Story & Photo Gallery | Girls Boxscore | Boys Boxscore)
