Dexter lacrosse season ends in blowout loss

By Kaleb Roedel

With 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Dexter High School's Kevin Mors caught a pass with his back turned to Orchard Lake St. Mary's net.

Mors pivoted left, a defender was there. He juked right, two more defenders swarmed him. Mors was bullied from scoring position and never got a shot off before the horn sounded.

It was a microcosm of the Dreadnaughts' 17-0 shutout loss to the No. 1-seeded Eaglets Tuesday in the Division 2, Region 7 Boys Lacrosse tournament at Father Gabriel Richard High School.

"They're the fastest team we've seen all year," admitted Mors of St. Mary's, ranked 4th in Division 2 heading into regionals. "If you made one misstep or took one bad angle, the kid was right on you and had your stick. One mistake and the ball was down."

That was evident from the opening face-off. The Eaglets scored two goals in the first two minutes on the way to a 5-0 first-quarter lead.

"They were just deeper, more athletic and had more experience," said Dexter coach Brian Callanan, whose team was outshot 46-25 at game's end. "And that's reflected in the score and in the time of possession."

Dexter allowed six more goals in the second to sit in an 11-0 hole at halftime. Anchoring the Eaglets was Drake Chwalibog, who scored all of his game-high five goals in the first half.

"We just couldn't control possession on offense and our defense just kind of got worn down because they had the ball so much," explained Mors. "We couldn't give our defense a break and as the game went on they just got more and more shots on us."

The Dreads tightened the defense in the third; giving up just two goals thanks to the play of goalie John Brosch, who fended off a number of shots. He finished with 15 saves.

But St. Mary's wasted no time adding to its count in the fourth, as Brendan Austin netted a pair of goals in the opening minutes. The Eaglets tacked on two more to finish out the 17-0 tally.

Taylor Docking finished with three goals and five assists to help lead St. Mary's offense. Meanwhile, earning the shutout was goalie Cameron Schulze.

Despite Dexter's loss, "We never gave up and we were tenacious and that's one of the hallmarks of this team and this program," said Callanan. "For us, as a first-year team, just getting to this stage is a testament to the hard work these kids put in."

"These boys -- most of them -- now have one year of lacrosse experience behind them. I think they set the bar high for everybody to follow. I couldn't be more proud of them and the effort they put out there today."

Orchard Lake St. Mary's faces Warren De La Salle, which defeated Father Gabriel Richard (17-7), in the regional championship game Saturday.
