Justin Goike no-hitter earns Saline a baseball regional title; Dexter and Gabriel Richard eliminated

With its fifth Division 1 regional title in the past six years on the line, the Saline High School baseball team put the ball in Justin Goike’s hand for Saturday’s championship game.

Allen Park never had a chance against the 6-foot-2 senior right-hander.

Goike threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the Hornets’ 8-0 win at Monroe High School, which continued the team’s dominant tournament run.

Including an 11-1 win over Wayne Memorial in Saturday’s semifinal game, Saline has outscored its four postseason opponents by a combined score of 46-3.

The Hornets (29-10) will meet Livonia Stevenson in a state quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Michigan’s Ray Fisher Stadium. (Division 1 bracket)

Goike, who surrendered three walks to Allen Park, was one of four Saline batters to record a pair of hits in the title game. Andrew White (three RBIs), Trent Theisen (home run) and Austin Hauck (double, RBI) were the others. (Boxscore | Recap)

Gage Hammond was the offensive star against Wayne Memorial, going 4-for-4 with two triples, a double and two RBIs. Hauck had three hits and three RBIs and White contributed a double, triple and two RBIs in the mercy-rule shortened win. (Boxscore | Recap)

Dexter reaches D1 final, toppled by Howell

After rolling to an 8-1 win over Portage Central in a Division 1 regional semifinal Saturday in Portage, the Dexter High School baseball team lost by the same score in a championship game against Howell.

Howell starter Josh Vyletel limited Dexter (27-13) to three hits through six innings before turning the ball over to Jonny Chesire for a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

The Highlanders (23-10) put the game away with a six-run sixth inning. Brandon Risacher paced the Highlanders’ 13-hit attack with three hits. D.J. Arnold added a two-run home run.

Jordan Sharp, Dylan Pierce and Chris Zalucha had Dexter’s hits. (Boxscore | Recap)

Against Portage Central, Zalucha and Hank Dreffs each hit home runs for the Dreadnaughts, who took a big lead by scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. Dylan Pierce had three hits and an RBI for Dexter. (Boxscore | Recap)

Joel Gowen threw a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts.

Howell will face Brighton in a quarterfinal on Tuesday. (Division 1 bracket)


Father Gabriel Richard falls in D3 semifinal

Gavin Potter had two of Father Gabriel Richard’s five hits in a 6-3 loss to Hillsdale in a Division 3 regional semifinal on Saturday at Clinton High School.

Joe Kendzicky took loss the loss for the Fighting Irish (13-18), allowing four earned runs on seven hits through 5 1/2 innings. He struck out six and walked eight. (Boxscore)

Seven different players accounted for Hillsdale’s seven hits and Gabriel Richard helped with three errors.

Gabriel Richard scored single runs in three of the first four innings to lead 3-2, but Hillsdale starter Travis Hodos blanked the Fighting Irish from there.

The Hornets (29-10) beat East Jackson, 7-4, in the regional title game. (Division 3 bracket)
