Kenny Dennis, Dearborn too much for Skyline football in 35-14 loss

By Kaleb Roedel

A winless junior-brimmed team that likes to pass against an undefeated senior-heavy squad anchored by its running game.

The Skyline and Dearborn high school football teams couldn’t have been on more different ends of the spectrum when they squared off at Skyline High School on Friday.

Despite trailing only 14-7 at halftime, Skyline was overwhelmed by the Pioneers in the second half of its 35-14 non-conference loss.

“The big thing tonight was we wanted to have some time of possession and march the ball down the field,” said Dearborn coach Dave Mifsud, whose Pioneers (9-0) finished with 253 rushing yards, spearheaded by running back Kenny Dennis, who rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.

Skyline (0-9) had just 53 yards rushing on 26 attempts. And while the Eagles passed for 238 yards, they threw three interceptions.

“I honestly thought if we would’ve capitalized a couple times early in the game …,” said Skyline coach Randy Hutchison. “We were close to making a couple more things happen and we just didn’t quite click. The offense wasn’t hitting on all cylinders tonight.”

That was emulated by the scoreless first quarter, highlighted by Eagles’ cornerback Theron Wilson batting away a would-be Dearborn touchdown pass in the end zone.

“We couldn’t handle the blitzes early on,” said Skyline quarterback Andrew Copp, who threw for 190 yards. “We just couldn’t find our chances early on. We’d string a couple plays together and just couldn’t put it away.”
