Pioneer girls basketball beats Flint Northern and more Friday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Looking over her stat book, Pioneer High School girls basketball coach Chrystal Westfield tried to find a standout from her team’s season opening 66-34 win at home over Flint Northern, but was at a loss.

The rebounds were well distributed, as were the steals and assists. Even girls who didn’t score had big nights defensively, everyone who dressed logged minutes and nine girls found the scoring sheet.

Not being able to pick a standout was a problem Westfield didn’t mind having.

"It was a great night,” Westfield said. It felt very good and everybody got a chance to play and everyone did well in an area.”

In the 20 years Westfield has coached at Pioneer, Northern has been an opponent every year and this is just the fourth time in that span Pioneer has defeated the Vikings.

“We didn’t know what to expect except that they’d be very athletic,” Westfield said. “We just moved the ball well, stayed under our goal for turnovers and over our team goal for rebounds.”

Pioneer (1-0) turned it over 12 times after setting a goal to be under 15 and had 25 rebounds. Maya Richmond had four offensive rebounds and scored six of her 11 points on put-backs.

“I just think we crashed the boards tonight,” Westfield said, pointing out the strong performance of Emma Brann and Daniesha Scott on the defensive glass.

Kamilah Carter led all scorers with 20 points, including a run in the second quarter where she scored seven straight, helping the Pioneers to a 34-16 halftime lead. Also putting up double digits for Pioneer was Megan Schechtman who scored 11.

Mykel Thompson led Northern with 16 points.
