Milan finishes seventh at Division 3 championships; Chelsea 28th
Milan High School boys swimming coach Dan Heikka thought his team had some room to move up from its seventh place position heading into the second day of the MHSAA Division 3 boys swimming and diving state championships.
He probably wasn't counting on not scoring in the 400 freestyle relay, though. Milan, which had the top qualifying time in the event, was disqualified from the final on Saturday.
Milan finished as projected with a seventh-place finish on Saturday at the Holland Aquatic Center with 109 points. Hamilton came in first with 251.5 points, Holland Christian was second with 237.5.
Milan's 200 medley relay team of Tyler Digesare, Dylan Shearer, Tyler Fisher, and Mark McCrae finished in third place with a time of 1 minute, 37.08 seconds, breaking the school record in the event for the second day in a row.
Fisher finished in third 200 individual medley (2:00.01) and second in the 100 butterfly (51.57). Digesare was third in the 100 backstroke (53.88) and Shearer was second in the 100 breaststroke, finishing just .36 seconds behind East Grand Rapids' Matt Hooper.
Chelsea's Colby Wrathall finshed in 11th place in the diving competition with 315 points. Grand Rapids West Catholic's Nick Burciaga won the event with 512.3 points, the most of any diver in the the respective division championships on Saturday.
