Milan's Lindsey Lammers advances to semifinals of Michigan Women's Amateur

ST. CLAIR - Recent Milan High School graduate Lindsey Lammers had plenty of stroke play success during her high school golf career. This summer was the first time she's competed in a match play tournament.

So far, so good in that format, too.

Lammers, who won the Golf Association of Michigan Girls’ Junior Champion in match play earlier this summer, has reached the semifinal round of the 94th Michigan Women’s Amateur at St. Clair Country Club with a 2-and-1 victory over Michigan State University junior Maddi Massa on Thursday.

“This is only the second tournament where I’ve played match play but so far I’m undefeated so I guess I like it,” said Lammers. “I was up and down today which is what match play is all about.”

Lammers, who will attend the University of Detroit-Mercy in the fall, said it was her putt on the par-5 13th that gave her momentum in the quarterfinal.

“I sunk a long putt that put me 3 up and once I did that I knew all I had to do was shoot par the rest of the way,” said Lammers.

In her early match, Lammers ousted 2009 defending champion Britney Hamilton of Western Michigan 2-and-1.

Lammers will play 2009 runner-up Natalie Brehm, a senior-to-be at MSU, at 8:15 a.m. on Friday. Brehm beat the University of Michigan's Meagan Bauer 2-and-1 on Thursday.

The tournament's first semifinal matches up sisters Amy and Christine Meier of Rochester Hills against each other. They tee off at 8 a.m. The finals will be played Friday afternoon.

Amy Meier plays for Ohio State and Christina Meier for Michigan State.

“I think it is more about sibling rivalry than Big Ten rivalry,” said Amy.

Christine Meier defeated Saline High School graduate Sarah Hoffman from the quarterfinals, 3-and-2. Amy Meier defeated Michigan's Ashley Bauer 2-and-1.

“I was just sinking a lot of putts,” said Christine. “Both Amy and I are playing really well this week so tomorrow should be a great match.”
