Pioneer boys fend off Saline comeback in 47-46 win

By Pete Cunningham

Saline High School freshman Reece Dils stepped to the free-throw line to shoot four consecutive free throws with less than two minutes remaining and his team trailing, 41-38.

It was the first time Dils ever stepped to the line in front of a home crowd on a Friday night, and was easily the least amount of pressure he'd been under all night.

Pioneer's defensive gameplan centered on denying Dils the ball, so when he stepped to the line and didn't have multiple defenders in his face, even with the game on the line, it was in some ways a relief.

"I'm just thinking it's another pair of free throws and I gotta knock ‘em down," Dils said.

He made the free throws and two more on the ensuing possession to give Saline (4-9, 2-5) a three-point lead with 1:17 remaining. But Pioneer (6-5, 5-2) was able to go on a six-point run of its own and to walk away with a 47-46 Southeastern Conference Red Division win. (Rest of the Story | Boxscore)
