Moments after the opening tip of Pioneer High School's cross-town showdown with Skyline, Pioneer's six-foot-seven center James Kelly stole a pass and hammered down a breakaway dunk.

Those two points were part of Pioneer's 20-0 first-quarter run, which it rode to an eventual 64-48 home win over Skyline in a Southeastern Conference Red Division boys basketball game Wednesday.

"James basically started the game with a steal and breakaway dunk and that set the tone for us," said Pioneer coach Rex Stanczak, whose team led 25-5 after the first. "We jumped out 20-0 and that was really the story of the game. We played really well early."

Kelly played a mere 12 minutes but managed to compile eight points and seven blocks for Pioneer (5-1, 2-0 SEC). Leading the offense throughout were Aaron Schoenfeldt and Jimmy Holman with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

"They came out very strong, and unfortunately we came out tentative and were feeling out the situation instead of going at it," said Skyline coach Mike Lovelace.

Skyline (1-4, 0-1 SEC) outscored Pioneer in the second quarter 14-8 to make for a 33-19 halftime count. Steering the scoring was Skyline's Theron Wilson, who finished with a team-high 11 points. Jarrius Mann and Trevonn Banks added eight points apiece.
