HARTLAND -- In the span of five minutes, Pioneer went from running out the clock on offense, a state title berth within reach, to watching their opponents run across the field in victory.

Bloomfield Hills United scored the game-tying goal with 1:03 left and the go-ahead goal with 20 seconds left to stun Pioneer, 10-9, Wednesday night at Hartland High School in a state semifinal game.

Pioneer battled back to briefly take the lead at 9-8 with 2:02 to play, after trailing for most of the second half. But the tide turned with 1:17 left, when Pioneer went into a stall but turned the ball over when a referee ruled a player used her body to prevent the ball from going out of bounds.

Fourteen seconds later, Bloomfield Hills tied the game on a low shot from in front of the net. The Blackhawks won the ensuing faceoff, and with 20 seconds left scored on a free position in front for the go-ahead goal.

The final faceoff of the game was again won by Bloomfield Hills, as the Blackhawks ran out the clock and celebrated the victory.

“Possession is key on the draw, and once you have possession you’re in control of the game,” Pioneer coach Zachary Maghes said.

This year marked the third straight the Pioneers have advanced to the state semifinals. Pioneer finishes the season at 15-5.

“We only achieved three of our goals this year,” Maghes said. “The fourth goal was to win this game and the fifth goal was to win state. But overall it was a great run. We can hang our hat on being regional champions, making the final four and competing with that team right there all the way to the end.”

The first time the two teams played, Pioneer jumped out to a five-goal lead, and went on to win 17-12 back on April 25. That came after a one-goal game last year.

“Every time we’ve played these guys it’s been like that,” Bloomfield Hills coach Andy Reed said.

Wednesday, Pioneer was once again able to get on top early. After keeping it scoreless through an early yellow card against, Pioneer scored three goals in less than a minute early in the first half, and led 4-1 with 12:20 left in the first half.

Sam Zwolan scored three of the Pioneers’ first four goals, and added one more for a game-high four goals.

“She’s a two-time all-state player, and she’s a captain on the team so we definitely look to her to come through in the clutch,” Maghes said.

Bloomfield Hills scored four of the final five goals of the first half, and the teams went into the break tied, before Bloomfield Hills scored 1:40 into the second half and took a two-goal lead with 13:27 left.

From there, Pioneer scored three straight in a four-minute span, including when Caroline Hurd picked up a loose ball and carried it end-to-end and stuff the game-tying goal with 6:37 left.

“I think we’re good at making adjustments, and then executing on adjustments,” Maghes said. “We just talked about staying positive and that we can score quick. That’s what we came out and did.”

Pioneer took its first lead of the second half with 2:02 left, when Andrea Martin took a pass in front from Laura Matney and buried it to make it 9-8.

From there, Bloomfield Hills was able to make its comeback. But the message in the Pioneer postgame huddle was positive.

“They played great, and I just said that we didn’t get to where we wanted to be but you’ve just got to pick yourself up,” Maghes said.

“You’re always going to fall down in life, but you’ve got to just pick yourself up and keep your head up.”
