The Pioneer High School synchronized swimming team completed a clean sweep of all routine events at the state routine finals this weekend, winning its second consecutive and 17th overall state championship in the process.

Pioneer finished with 182 points, finishing ahead of host Troy (163) and Huron (144).

The state championship is determined using team scores from the state figure finals on Feb. 5 and this weekend’s state routine finals.

The two Ann Arbor schools owned the trio competition, with Pioneer’s Sachi Gianchandani, Jera Hogan and Kayoon Jung finishing first with a season-high score of 67.000. Huron’s Laura Ganzel, Jackie Maeroff and Katy Thompson were second (63.167) and Pioneer’s Rana Aljammali, Katie Holda and Kiyoon Jung third (63.000).

In duet competition, which Pioneer coach Alice Seipelt called the most closely-contested event of the evening, Pioneer sophomore sisters Kayoon and Kiyoon Jung defended their title with a top score of 67.667. Pioneer senior Sachi Gianchandani teamed with junior Jera Hogan to capture silver with a score of 65.667.

Pioneer’s free team routine beat out second-place Troy with another season-high score of 67.750. Aljammali, Gianchandani, Hogan, Holda, Kayoon Jung, Kiyoon Jung and Katie Gala defended the team title for the third year in a row.
