And neither team's offenses seemed to be heating up in overtime.
Until - with two minutes left in the sudden death overtime, and with a penalty stroke shootout looming - the Pioneers' Sydney Supica took a pass from Margaret Burns off of a corner and tucked a shot into the left corner of the Blue Devils' net, lifting Pioneer to a 1-0 win over Grosse Pointe South at Huron's Riverbank Stadium.
"A lot of hard work is paying off," said Pioneer coach Jane Nixon, whose team advances to Saturday's finals against cross-town rival Huron. "Going into overtime, we felt prepared, and it's awesome that we really came together."
"It was really just a team effort. We put so much hard work into it. We wanted it so bad," added Supica, who brought Pioneer's unity to game-winning fruition. "We got a couple tips and just put the ball between the pipes. It felt really good. Everyone's just so happy."
