Previewing this week's girls high school basketball district tournaments

By Bison Collins Messink

Though it won’t be March until Tuesday, the madness officially begins Monday when the win-or-go home MHSAA girls basketball playoffs begin.

Last season, four Washtenaw County team -- Huron, Saline Milan and Manchester -- won their district tournaments. With one Class D district entirely comprised of Washtenaw County teams, the area is guaranteed at least one champion this year.

How many more could there be? AnnArbor.com offers the following breakdown of every district involving a Washtenaw County team and invites you to predict a winner in our polls:

CLASS A

PICK YOUR WINNER

AT PIONEER HIGH SCHOOL

Monday: Pinckney (12-7) vs. Huron (16-4), 5:30 p.m.; Brighton (7-13) vs. Pioneer (17-3), 7:15 p.m.

Wednesday: Pinckney/Huron winner vs. Dexter (13-6), 5:30 p.m.; Brighton/Pioneer winner vs. Skyline (0-20), 7:15 p.m.

Friday: Final, 7:15 p.m.

Breakdown: Pioneer and Huron were the two best teams in the SEC this season, making it a strong possibility that they face one another in the final. Huron has the tougher draw to get there, with a Pinckney team that beat Pioneer’s opening round foe, Brighton, twice this season. In the semis, Huron would face a tough Dexter team, while Pioneer would see winless Skyline.

Possible X-factor: Dexter. The Dreadnaughts loom to spoil a Pioneer-Huron final. Dexter has the depth to compete with Huron, but not many teams this year have shown the toughness necessary to go toe-to-toe with the River Rats and their relentless pressure.

PICK YOUR WINNER

AT YPSILANTI HIGH SCHOOL

Monday: Lincoln (4-16) vs. Ypsilanti (11-8), 5:30 p.m.; Monroe (9-11) vs. Saline (6-14), 7 p.m.

Wednesday: Lincoln/Ypsilanti winner vs. Temperance Bedford (14-6), 5:30 p.m.; Monroe/Saline winner vs. Adrian (4-14), 7 p.m.

Friday: Final, 7 p.m.

Breakdown: Bedford is the team to beat among these six teams that are all thanking their lucky stars they didn’t land in a district with Huron or Pioneer. The Kicking Mules are beatable though. Saline went down and got a win in Bedford’s gym early in the season. Ypsilanti has shown flashes of being a very good team, but has struggled to find consistency. The Phoenix boast one of the best backcourt duos in the SEC in Delisia Morris and Jasmine Jones. If they can take care of the basketball, they have the most potent offense in an otherwise defensive-minded district.

Possible X-factor: Saline was a surprise district champion last season and is hoping to repeat that success. The Hornets’ Emily Everett is one of the most skilled shooters in the SEC, and she will be critical to Saline’s success.

CLASS B

PICK YOUR WINNER

AT MILAN HIGH SCHOOL

Monday: Onsted (18-2) vs. Chelsea (15-5), 5 p.m.; Milan (2-17) vs. Ida (16-3), 7 p.m.

Wednesday: Onsted/Chelsea winner vs. Tecumseh (2-18), 5 p.m.; Milan/Ida winner vs. Father Gabriel Richard (9-10), 7 p.m.

Friday: Final, 7 p.m. Breakdown: Gabriel Richard knocked Chelsea out in triple overtime in the first round of districts last year. This season, the two teams may very well meet up in the district final, though each has tough teams to beat to get there.

Possible X-factor: Onsted and Ida are both good teams that have had a lot of success this season, but didn’t face the same stiff competition that Chelsea did in the SEC, or Gabriel Richard did in the Catholic League.

CLASS C

PICK YOUR WINNER

AT MANCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL

Monday: Greenhills (12-6) vs. Clinton (15-4), 6 p.m.; Manchester (12-7) vs. Willow Run (4-10), 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday: Greenhills/Clinton winner vs. Whitmore Lake (0-19), 6 p.m.; Manchester/Willow Run winner vs. Napoleon (11-8), 7:30 p.m.

Friday: Final, 7 p.m.

Breakdown: Manchester was a Cinderella district champ last season, as the Flying Dutch surprised even themselves by knocking off Napoleon in the district final. Manchester had a strong season this year, led by a pair of sophomores, McKenna Erkfritz and Taylor Manders, who will be looking to duplicate the postseason success they enjoyed as freshmen. Standing in their way is Clinton, who beat them early in the season, and Napoleon, who split the season series with Manchester.

Possible X-factor: Greenhills. The Gryphons have a pair of 200-point scorers in Marissa Thompson and Jackie Oestreich, while Rachel Darrabie gives Greenhills yet another good scoring option.

CLASS D

PICK YOUR WINNER

AT WASHTENAW CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Wednesday: Washtenaw Christian vs. Eastern Washtenaw Multicultural Academy, 5 p.m.; Rudolf Steiner vs. Calvary Christian, 7 p.m.

Friday: Final, 7 p.m.

Breakdown: Washtenaw Christian and Rudolf Steiner are the overwhelming favorites to match up in the final. Washtenaw Christian’s Becca Grimes is a big-time scorer who has gone off for 30 or more points on multiple occasions this year. For Rudolf Steiner, Maureen Terrill and Anika Sproull form a potent one-two punch.

Possible X-factor: Perhaps EWMA or Calvary Christian will pull off the ultimate upset if they can catch the Wildcats or the Storm looking ahead to the district finals.
