Milan's Dillon Farrell rewarded with livestock and other notes from the MHSAA wrestling finals

By Pete Cunningham

Milan High School's Dillon Farrell was one of just a handful of wrestlers who finished fourth in regional competition to win their first match at Thursday's first day of the MHSAA individual state finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Of course, Farrell was also one of the few state qualifiers to be rewarded with livestock.

Farrell is a farm boy, and he’s proud of it. His family lives on 32 acres, where there are chickens and chores aplenty. When he’s cutting weight, Farrell likes to go out to the coop and feed the chickens. It relaxes him. Takes his mind off of everything.

Before the season started Farrell’s father promised him that if he qualified for the state tournament, he’d buy him a cow.

What does a wrestler who’s been cutting weight all season want a cow for? What do you think. Farrell doesn’t plan on showing it, and could care less about the milk. He’s taking it to slaughter.

“It’s like a thousand pounds of meat right there,” Farrell said shortly after securing a spot in the state tournament. “That’s a lot of big juicy steaks to eat.”

RECORD BREAKERS Manchester 119-pounder Ryan Abrigo elapsed the school record for wins in a season at the team state finals in Battle Creek last week when he recorded his 59th and 60th wins. The mark stood for five years after Josh Ritter and Dan Lobbestael won 58 apiece in the 2005-06 season.

After winning his 61st match on Thursday at The Palace, Abrigo is creeping toward another major milestone. If he wins his next three matches, he would be tied for the 15th most wins in a season in state history.

The record for wins in a season is 73, set by Flint Kearsley’s Matthew Brady in 1990-91.

Abrigo isn’t the only Washtenaw County wrestler making headway on records. Dexter freshman 103-pounder Steven Bleise won his 49th match of the season on Thursday. One more, and he will be on pace to break the Dexter High School all-time mark of 198.

But that’s still a long ways away.

COMING TO YOU LIVE Last year marked the first year that the MHSAA introduced live web streaming of every single match from the three-day long Individual Wrestling State Finals on MHSAA.tv.

There were a few kinks to work out from its inaugural year, most of which were the result of the unexpected 330,000 page views over the course of the three-day event. This year, the MHSAA has partnered with FoxSportsDetroit.com and is ready for the traffic spike.

How officials came up with the idea that has caught on like wildfire is as simple as it is genius. Cameras were set up at each mat years ago so that wrestlers warming up in the tunnels beneath the stadium would know when they were due on the mat. Last year, someone wondered if those cameras were capable of streaming that very content onto the Internet.

The answer was yes.
