Rudolf Steiner heading to volleyball quarterfinals, Chelsea heading home

By Staff

Senior captain Tessa Belanger enjoyed an error-free 12-kill night to boost the Ann Arbor Rudolf Steiner volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-22) victory in a Class D regional final at Bellevue High School on Thursday.

It was the first regional crown for the Storm (44-9-5), who got past Newport Lutheran South in five sets Tuesday and will take on Mendon next Tuesday in the state quarterfinals at Litchfield High School.

"We're half the size of most of the teams we're going up against, but we have a lot of talent," Rudolf Steiner coach Alex Perrin said. "You can't ask much more for a school our size. We've never been here before and it's a lot of fun."

Perrin indicated that the Storm didn't play its best against Lutheran South on Tuesday, but a high-quality practice and strong fan support pushed his team to a new level against Huron Valley Lutheran.

"(Tuesday) we played poorly, but everything came together for this match," Perrin said. "We put the work in, but it felt serendipitous tonight. We had three-quarters of the school in the gym, maybe 70 kids. That was helped put everyone in the right place emotionally."

Belanger, an outside hitter, had a .444 hitting percentage and was flawless on 27 swings. She also added 10 digs on the defensive side.

"They were trying to stop Tessa, but they couldn't," Perrin said. "She was that good. She had a nearly perfect match. She could do no wrong."
