Looking for the perfect addition to your man cave? How about a fully-functioning, old-school scoreboard?

Saline Area Schools athletic director Rob White has posted the old scoreboard from the district's Crabtree Field for sale on eBay. The high bid as of noon Thursday: 99 cents.

The scoreboard was used during a middle school football game on Tuesday, but came down Wednesday to make room for a more modern scoreboard that was relocated from the high school football stadium.

“As we were talking about it, it was like, ‘What do we do with this thing? I don’t want to throw it away,’” White said. “So we went to the superintendent (Scot Graden) with a crazy idea: I wonder if there’s an old-time football player, somebody who collects memorabilia or somebody nostalgic that would want to buy it?”

The Daktronics-brand scoreboard is still resting against its old supports at the Corona Athletic Complex, located between Saline Middle School at 7190 N. Maple Rd. and Liberty School at 7265 Saline-Ann Arbor Road. The winning bidder will also receive a control keyboard.

White says the scoreboard, which he estimates at 25 feet wide and 15 feet high, has been used at Crabtree Field since the late 1970s or early 80s.

Saline played its varsity football games at the field until the new high school was built in 2004. It’s still used for high school lacrosse, middle school track, middle school football and other events.

White didn’t place a minimum bid on the scoreboard, primarily because he had no idea how much it would sell for.

“We had no idea where to start. If we make $100, that’s $100 we didn’t have. If we make $1,000, even better,” White said. “We’re just trying to utilize the resources we have. And if somebody can have fun with it and utilize it, why not?”

White says the eBay sale is a sign of how athletic departments are being forced to be creative with funding.

“Typically, in the past, we probably would have just thrown it away,” White said. “But if we can make a little money and sink it back into our facilities, that’s obviously a better solution.”

The auction runs through Oct. 9.

@81wolverine... I think the not "fully functioning" part is part of its charm. Kind of like a beat-up old antique.

I hope they didn't use that picture for the Ebay ad. It definitely does NOT look like it's fully functioning - lights out in a number of spots.
