Saline beats Pioneer 103-83 in battle of state swimming powers

By Courtney Sacco

Over the past decade, the Saline High School or Pioneer High School boys swimming teams have won seven of the 10 the Division 1 MHSAA state championships. The state powers faced each other on Thursday at Saline in a dual meet that normally serves as a state championship preview.

Saline won 10 events, including one record-setting time by senior David Boland, en route to a 100-83 over Pioneer in boys swimming on Thursday.

Boland won the 100 yard butterfly in 49.93 and also took the 100 backstroke in 52.92.

Boland's time in the 100 butterfly was a pool record as was teammate Josh Ehrman's time of 57.09 in the 100 breaststroke.

Adam Whitener of Saline also was a double winner in the 100 freestyle (47.29) and 50 freestyle (21.86).

"It was a very fast meet with many state cuts for both Saline and Pioneer," Pioneers coach Dennis Hill said.

Saline swept all three relays.

Pioneer is now on more even footing with many other schools due to it's enrollment size. It cannot any longer field the very best teams because it has twice the number of student athletes to pick from. Stop whining that Skyline has taken all our talent blah blah blah. There are limitations, but anyone in Ann Arbor has the chance of going to Pioneer if they want to based on in-district transfers. So in a way, they can still stack talent if they want to. They just need to be able to have some forsight since the transfers only apply to freshman. http://www.annarbor.com/news/its-official-ann-arbor-huron-pioneer-to-accept-applications-for-in-district-transfers-skyline-commun/

pioneer is not as strong as it used to be. skyline has taken some of the swimmers pioneer had. saline has not had to do this. but all said and done saline won and that should be it.

I'm always glad to see coverage of high school sports other than football and basketball but why only pictures of the Saline guys?
