Saline girls, boys cross country win SEC Red titles; Dexter girls, boys claim SEC White

By AnnArbor.com Staff

For the 15th straight season, the Saline High School girls cross country team won the Southeastern Conference Red Division championship.

Saline showcased four runners in the top 10 on its way to 38 points at the third SEC Jamboree on Thursday at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter. Not far behind in second was Huron (46), followed by Monroe (82), Bedford (93), Pioneer (111) and Skyline (144).

"Our seven varsity girls didn't want the string of SEC championships to end," said Saline coach Mike Smith. "They felt the pressure of continuing that string, but used it in a positive way rather than let the pressure get to them. It served as a great motivator."

Pacing Saline was Alyssa Cummings with a third-place time of 19 minutes, 5 seconds. Cummings' teammate Amy Creutz was on her heels in fourth (19:16), while Kristin Green took seventh (19:40) and Elianna Shwayder nabbed 10th (19:50).

Runner-up Huron, meanwhile, was led by the first- and second-place punch of Annie Norah-Beveridge and Allie Cell, who finished neck and neck at 19:04.

"We ran very well; we wish we could've closed the deal and given (Saline) a bit more of a battle," said Huron coach Kevin Behmer. "But, we were pleased with what we did."

"Huron ran very well," noted Smith. "They ran aggressively and pushed us throughout the race."
