The Plymouth High School golf team had the top two players at a Division 1 district tournament played Thursday at Whispering Willow Golf Course in Livonia.

But, by the narrowest of margins, Saline had the best team.

The Hornets matched Plymouth with a 299 team score and won the district title on a fifth-score tie-breaker.

Saline and Skyline, which earned the sixth and final qualifying spot at the 12-team tournament, advance to regional play next week at West Shore Country Club on Grosse Ile. They’ll be joined by five individual qualifiers from Pioneer and Huron.

"We played very well and it was very exciting," Saline coach Debbie Williams-Hoak said. "The guys have worked really hard all year and we peaked at the right time.

“If they keep playing like have been, I think we have a good chance on going all the way to state."

Plymouth's Kyle Rodes shot a 71 to medal at the tournament. Teammate Josh Heinze tied with Skyline's Conner Lang for second place at 72. Saline's Caleb Wittig led his team, shooting a 73.

D.J. Aben (75), Ryan Peruski (75) and Ian Martin (76) rounded out Saline’s scoring. The Hornets’ title-clinching fifth scorer, Jackson Lambert, carded a 79.

Skyline finished sixth with a 318 team score. The Eagles’ Josh Bourque tied for eighth place with a 76.

The top six individuals not on a qualifying team also advanced to regional play. Five of them are Ann Arbor students: Huron’s Reid McCallister (78), Guy Frydenlund (79) and Pioneer’s Brendan Schoonover (80), Nick Margolis (81) and Keegan Pape (82).
