The Hornets (15-6-3) were making their second regional final appearance in program history. The last, in 2006, ended in a 4-0 loss to eventual state runner-up Northville.
Chelsea, Dexter golfers qualify for states
Chelsea’s Mason Wagner and Dexter’s Brennan Conter qualified for the state meet as individuals during Division 2 regional tournament play at Eldorado Golf Course in Cadillac on Friday.
The top three individuals not on qualifying teams earn a trip to the state finals. Wagner’s 72 was good for third-place overall and led Chelsea to a ninth-place team finish.
"Mason really hit the ball well off the tee, but didn't have his A-game," Chelsea coach Joe Ewald said of Wagner, who finished 14th at last year’s state finals. "He didn't let an average score happen. He kept battling and getting up-and-down, making putts to get a good number."
Conter shot a 75 for seventh-place Dexter. Ryan Schoner shot 78, giving the Dreadnaughts a pair of top 15 finishes. Milan finished 10th at the 12-team event. (Complete results & scores)
Tecumseh (304), Mason (308) and Marshall (310) earned the team qualifying scores.
