Saline soccer surrenders lead late in 1-1 tie with Livonia Stevenson

By Pete Cunningham

The Saline High School soccer team took a beating over the weekend, losing two games by a combined score of 8-0 against East Kentwood and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central. With that in consideration, the Hornets' 1-1 tie against Livonia Stevenson in Saline was a vast improvement.

But after holding a 1-0 lead from the seventh until the 75th minute, coach Saline coach Brian Lampman couldn't help but be a little disappointed.

"You keep giving them opportunity after opportunity and their going to capitalize. I'm dissappointed in some bad fouls that we took," Lampman said. "But on the flip side, we're a young team, we're still learning."

Saline took the lead in the seventh minute when Luke Collins headed in a cross from Eddie Mussi.

"We're dangerous in the air in front of the goal," Lampman said. "I like our activity, Luke had a nice header in the box there."

Stevenson had its share of opportunities, but couldn't find the back of the net until Camden Iwasko finished after a scrum in front of the net.

"I think as a coach you are more concerned if you're not having chances, but we had chances galore throughout the game and it was kind of disappointing not to score throughout the course of the game," said Stevenson coach Lars Richters. "It can get hard to keep your composure in situations like that. Even thought the ball's not going in and the clocks still ticking, you try to play the right away."

Saline had one last opportunity to win when the ball fell to the feet of Brent Merreot with Stevenson goalie John Boudreau well out of his net near the edge of the box.

Boudreau was able to recover from his poor positioning, however, and step in front of Merreot's shot just in time.

"It's a strong Stevenson side, and although we're not happy with the tie, it's still a step forward," said Lampman.
