Saline sweeps boys and girls meets at Bedford, and more Tuesday results

TEMPERANCE -- The Saline High School boys track team has had a tradition of strong throwers, and coach Al Leslie was pleased to see junior Tyler Villa step up Tuesday and make a claim to be next in line.

Villa won the discus and shot put, helping the Hornets win their Southeastern Conference-opening dual meet at Temperance Bedford, 86-54.

In the girls meet, the Hornets won 16 of 17 events and finished 1-2-3 in six individual events to cruise to a 110-24 win.

The girls got a pair of individual wins from Rachel Nyberg (100 hurdles, long jump) and Alina Luurtsema (100 dash, 200 dash). Luurtsema was also part of the winning 800 relay team.

The Hornet boys got single wins from Garrick Roemer (high jump), Steve Bastien (long jump), Chris Simon (110 hurdles), Jeremy Bebber (300 hurdles), Andrew Barnett (800 run) and Andrew Harper (3,200 run).

GIRLS TRACK Monroe 81, Huron 56: A 1-2-3 finish in the 300 meter hurdles highlighted the River Rats' home loss. Crossing the finish line in the event were Anna Masini (49.07 seconds), Cindy Ofili (:50.02) and Malica Yalamanchili (:51.09). "We had some pretty impressive performances," said Huron coach Keri Kirk. Ofili went on to add first-place finishes in the 100 dash (:12.05) and 100 hurdles (:16.02). Karyn Rapundalo and Maya Long added firsts in the two-mile run (12:09.09) and 400 dash (1:00.06), respectively. Huron was competing without three of its top scorers due to injury. (Results)

Ypsilanti 90, Adrian 47: Zevin Carter won the 100-meter hurdles (16.10 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (:50.27) to lead the Phoenix. Ypsilanti won all four relay events and had eight different individuals win events. "It was a rivalry meet," Ypsilanti coach Torin Moore said. "The girls needed that boost." (Results)

Chelsea 99, Tecumseh 38: Chelsea senior Olivia DeTroyer set a personal record with a time of 12.48 seconds in the 100-meter dash, won the 400 and was part of two first-place relay teams. Katrina Williams also had a strong performance for the Bulldogs, taking first in both hurdles events and running on the first-place 400 relay team. "It is very early in the season, but our girls performed well," said Chelsea coach Pat Clarke. (Results)

BOYS TRACK Monroe 118, Huron 19: Marcus Finney registered the lone individual win for the River Rats in their Southeastern Conference dual with the Trojans. Finney won the 200 meter dash in 22.09 seconds. Huron's only other victory came in the 400 meter relay, where the Rats crossed the finish line in 44.06 seconds. (Results)

Adrian 76, Ypsilanti 61: The Phoenix swept the relays but fell short in the SEC dual as the Maples won seven individual events. Ypsilanti's Andrew Hunt won the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles with times of 15.08 seconds and 41.84 seconds, respectively. Mike Webster won the high jump for the Phoenix. Ypsilanti coach Torin Moore said his team was hurt when they failed to place in the shot put and discus. (Results)
