This year, the Hornets started a streak of their own.
Saline scored a whopping 307 points—86 more than second-place Holland West Ottawa—to win its second consecutive state championship Saturday at Oakland University. Huron took fifth place with 172 points and Pioneer was sixth with 149.
Another incredible streak did continue this year for Pioneer, however.
Senior Hannah Cowley won individual titles in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle races for the third straight year. Cowley, who attended Marquette High School as a freshman, ends her high school career having gone a perfect eight-for-eight in individual state championship races.
Saline, however, knew of the likelihood that all the work it had done this season would pay off with another championship.
"All year we kind of planned for it, worked for it, earned it," Saline coach Todd Brunty said, with water dripping off his clothes after leaping into the pool in celebration. "It was a more enjoyable, longer process. Last year was a surprise. This season was very special all year."

Congrats to Saline and to all the swimmers. That last relay was amazing, one of the most exciting races in HS swimming. Boyle and DeMonte are great and gracious competitors. And a shout out to Cowley who has a remarkable HS career.
