Saline, Father Gabriel Richard boys start team competition today; Long, five other individuals vie for titles on Saturday
Cheyenne Long has been there before. She’s heard the loud crowds and felt the eyes of hundreds of people staring down her approach.
But the Saline High School senior doesn’t think her experience at last year’s MHSAA bowling state championships - an experience she considers disappointing, despite a top 16 finish - is what will help her succeed in Saturday’s return appearance.
“I feel like I’ve worked harder this year,” she says. “I just feel like I’m pretty prepared for it.”
Long is one of six Washtenaw County high school bowlers who will compete in Saturday’s singles championships at four bowling centers around the state. Two teams - the boys from Saline and Father Gabriel Richard - will compete today.
Pioneer’s Mike Harrington, Huron’s Devon Micou and Saline’s Aaron Ohl will join Long at the Division 1 finals at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek. That’s where the Saline boys team will compete, as well.
Regional champion Justin Hazel, a sophomore at Skyline, will be joined by Milan’s Brittannie Divert and Coten Philipi at the Division 2 finals at Super Bowl in Canton.
The Gabriel Richard boys will play at Airport Lanes in Jackson on Friday, and one of its members - Michael Goike - will stick around to compete in the singles competition on Saturday.
Each of the divisions features 60-player singles fields in both boys and girls competition, and 18 team qualifiers on each side.
Long and Ohl - who qualified while attending Pioneer last year - are the only players making return trips to the finals.
Ohl wasn’t one of the top 16 players to advance from the morning session’s qualifying block.
Long, however, had the fifth-highest point total after that six-game round, but lost in the first round of match play to eventual state runner-up Amanda Wiska of White Lake Lakeland.
“It was actually a big disappointment. I want to do better,” she said, before inadvertently offering a tip to any other bowlers who reach the final 16. “I think I was nervous and I missed a lot of spares. There are a lot of people watching you, a little more pressure. You just have to keep a positive attitude.”
