Skyline boys basketball gets its biggest win, 75-59 at Chelsea

By Bison Collins Messink

If the Skyline High School boys basketball team wasn't being taken seriously before, it will be now.

The Eagles scored a signature win for their young program Tuesday night, going on the road to beat Chelsea, 75-59.

"This is our biggest win for sure," said Skyline coach Mike Lovelace.

The start of the game was moved up an hour and a half because of the snowstorm and both teams were sluggish early on. Chelsea (8-3, 4-3 SEC White) led at the half, 30-28, but the Eagles saw their opportunity.

"At halftime, coach gave us a great speech and really got us motivated," said Skyline's Jordan Woods, who finished with 14 points. "He said that this is our game to win, that Chelsea wasn't on its 'A' game. We were playing really well and we had to take it to them."

In the first half, the Eagles' confidence seemed to grow with each minute they stayed in the game. In the second weren't content just to stick around, and pushed the tempo to a faster pace than the Bulldogs usually play.

Skyline (5-6, 4-3 SEC Red) spaced the floor well offensively and shot 67 percent (18 of 27) in the second half. Chelsea's defenders couldn't stay in front of Woods, Jack Clark or Theron Wilson on the dribble-drive and the Eagles' athletic trio got to the basket almost at-will. Wilson finished with a game-high 21 points and Clark scored 10.
