Ypsilanti soccer advances to first-ever district final, Pioneer advances and more soccer scores

The Ypsilanti High School boys soccer team didn't have its coach on Wednesday, but with seven minutes left in its Division 2 district semifinal game against Gibraltar Carlson, it did have a goal.

And now the Phoenix will play in their first-ever district championship after hanging on to beat Carlson, 1-0.

Ypsilanti coach Terry Collins left for California to attend the funeral of his recently deceased father on Monday, shortly after Ypsilanti beat Carleton Airport, 5-0, in the opening round of district play.

Collins spoke to his team on the bus after the Airport win, reviewing strategy and tactics, and texted advice to his assistants during the rain-soaked game.

"We've been able to come to an agreement of what we want to do and how we want to do it," said Collins.

Collins said he was comfortable with his assistants and team's ability in his absence, but called in a favor from basketball coach Steve Brooks, who joined the team on the sideline as Collins' "super assistant."

Brooks wasn't there to offer strategic advice, "but the boys respect him and he's there to make sure the world keeps turning."

Ypsilanti outshot Carlson in the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Boone Sylvester scored an unassisted goal on a corner kick in the 73rd minute.

Ypsilanti will play New Boston Huron on Friday.

Down 1-0 at halftime, Lincoln (12-8-2) equalized in the 42nd minute off of Scott Chatfield's unassisted goal. After falling behind 2-1, Lincoln again pulled even on Usama Alqadi's 60th-minute goal, which was also unassisted.

"Tonight I think we outplayed them, we just gave up a couple of bad goals," Lincoln coach Bob Stowe said.

Bedford will face Pioneer in the district final on Friday at Saline High School. The Pioneers beat Monroe 7-0 on Wednesday. Friday's kickoff will be at 5 p.m.
