Saline volleyball eliminated; Manchester, Greenhills, Whitmore Lake advance to district finals

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Offensive struggles severely limited the Saline High School volleyball team Thursday night as its season ended at the hands of Southeastern Conference Red Division rival Temperance Bedford. The Hornets lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) to the host Kicking Mules in a Class A district semifinal.

“We weren’t able to put balls away when we needed to put balls away, and they did,” Saline coach Lisa Shea said.

Junior Mackenzie Shand led the Hornets with 15 kills and six blocks.

“(Shand) did just about everything she could out there,” Shea said.

Senior Mackenzie Schumborg contributed on both sides of the ball with seven kills and 16 digs.

“(Schumborg) played her tail off; she was just so competitive out there,” Shea said.

The Hornets were able to keep Bedford outside hitter Emily Blank at bay for most of the night. The Ms. Volleyball candidate has given the Hornets fits in the past, but Shea was pleased with her team’s effort against Blank.

“She didn’t hurt us as badly as she has in the past,” Shea said. “She is a good player but we were able to dig her tonight.”

Saline libero Natalie Sheridan kept her team in the match with her ability to dig balls and keep play alive. The junior had 26 digs.

“She dug deep tonight and got as many hands and elbows on as many balls as she could,” Shea said. “On the year I thought we did great. I look at this season as a good season."

Shea said that although she is excited for next year, it’s too soon to forget about this team.

“When you end your season with a loss, it’s hard and it really stinks," she said. "I gotta close this chapter first before looking forward to next year.”
