Skyline High School girls soccer coach Chris Morgan knew Chelsea was the No. 7-ranked team in Division 2. His players, however, were kept in the dark heading into their Thursday night matchup.

"I didn't think it was that imperative that they know," said Morgan, whose team consists of only freshmen and sophomores. "We're so young that the smallest of things can intimidate us."

That tactic proved effective for the Eagles, who went toe-to-toe with the state-ranked Bulldogs in a 1-1 deadlock at Chelsea High School.

"Our girls were a little frustrated because Skyline came out very aggressive. They were a very strong team," said Chelsea coach Kirsten Smart.

And after a scoreless first half, it was Skyline that struck first when Carmen Flescher weaved through the Bulldogs' defense and ricocheted a shot off a defender's leg and into the net 15 minutes, 11 seconds in.

"We were so ecstatic," Morgan said of the goal. "We just needed to regain our focus and keep working."

Chelsea, however, countered a shade over two minutes later on a goal from Cara Johnson. Anna Rode provided the assist.

The two teams gritted out the rest of the second half without any further goals for the 1-1 tie.

"Our girls were not passing. It was one of the more sloppy games that we've had," said Smart.

"The main key for us was we pressured them and we really stepped hard to every ball," noted Morgan. "We were always trying to double-team and double-down."

Morgan went on to admit, "It took us about 10 minutes to get our legs under us and really start to believe."

In the nets, Tori Norris made five saves for Skyline (3-1-1) and Michelle Wellman had five saves, as well, for Chelsea (6-0-3).

GIRLS SOCCER Huron 3, Lincoln 0: Bianca Williams scored two goals and Beth Boyer one as Huron improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference. Sarah Heineken got the shutout in goal for the River Rats. Lincoln falls to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the SEC. Pioneer 8, Ypsilanti 0: Olivia Clark provided the exclamation point in the Pioneers' road win, scoring three consecutive goals to round out the shutout. Clark was one of six Pioneers to find the net. "We moved the ball in the wide areas to create gaps. We did a much better job creating opportunities," said Pioneer coach Lumumba Shabazz, whose team led 3-0 at the half. Megan Schechtman led in assists with two. Pioneer goalie Kaitlyn Bedolla faced zero Phoenix shots. (Boxscore)

Dexter 2, Temperance Bedford 1: After Tuesday's loss to Huron, Dexter coach Scott Forrester quipped that "at least it wasn't a tie." That was true again Thursday, but this time the Dreadaughts - who had tied six straight games heading into this week - came away with a win. At halftime, it was trending toward a seventh deadlock. However, 12 minutes into the second half, Kristi Hughes launched a shot from just outside the box that hit the bottom of the crossbar, bounced straight down and into the goal for the winner. Emma Monaghan scored first for Dexter (2-1-6, 1-1-1 SEC) just three minutes into the game, off a long pass from Taylor Conter. Zaryn Jennings made four saves in goal. (Boxscore)

BOYS GOLF SEC Quad: Southeastern Conference Red Division members Pioneer and Saline each earned a pair of league victories with crossover matches against the SEC White's Chelsea and Dexter. The Pioneers shot a meet-low 164 to top the Dreadnaughts (168) and Bulldogs (171) while the Hornets did the same with a 165. Leading Pioneer were Zach Averill (39) and Davis Ransdell (40) on the par 36 Redemman Farms course. Saline was led by Josh Collins (39) and Chris Tierney (40). Chelsea's Mason Wagner shot a 39 and Dexter's Nick Dackiw a 41. (Results)

Father Gabriel Richard 170, Royal Oak Shrine 182: Irish golfers occupied the top four spots in their win at Leslie Park Golf Course. Ryan Jenkins took top scoring honors with a 5-over-par 41. Joe Leger was right behind him with a 42 while Eric Spore (43) and Alex Pietrasiuk (44) rounded out the top four. Coach Tom Allen said his team was in control most of the match as Shrine adjusted to playing the undulating Leslie Park course. (Results)

BOYS LACROSSE Pioneer 20, Temperance Bedford 0: Christian Bouchard scored four goals and Nick Mrjoian three for the Pioneers, who led 10-0 by the end of the first quarter. Father Gabriel Richard 9, Lapeer West 4: Colin McMahon scored a team-high four goals, leading the Fighting Irish to a road victory. But it was the Gabriel Richard (6-4) defense, behind 16 saves from goalie Michael Ramos, that fueled the win. "Defensively, we just continue to be outstanding," said Gabriel Richard coach Jim Carl. "Ramos made some big saves, particularly early in the game. (Lapeer West) came out shooting pretty hard." Bob Rosenberger added two goals and Matt Kolevar posted on goal and a team-high three assists for the Irish. (Boxscore)

GIRLS WATER POLO Huron 17, Grand Ledge 6: Every Huron player scored a goal in the River Rats' road win. "We were able to spread the ball around and really get everybody involved. It was total team effort," said Huron coach Evan Koorhan, whose team rushed out to a 9-1 lead by halftime. Scoring a team-high three goals was Kelcy Barrott, who added three assists. Kara Bowers, Jessica Ford, Emily Digiovanni and Greta Bolhuis chipped in two goals apiece for Huron (14-6). The River Rats held a 25-14 shot advantage. (Boxscore)

GIRLS TENNIS Dexter 7, Carleton Airport 1: Lindsay Franson, Lauren Gardner, Emily Magyar and Emily Durham gave the Dreadnaughts a sweep of the singles flights. The No. 3 team of Carolina Buckley and Katie Frauhammer had the highlight match in the doubles flights, splitting the first two sets (7-6, 5-7) before clinching the win with an 11-9 tie-breaker.
