Chelsea softball beats Tecumseh for first time since 2004, Huron baseball splits with Monroe and more Thursday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

TECUMSEH - The Tecumseh High School softball team, Division 2 state champions in 2007 and 2008, has been the team to beat in the Southeastern Conference in recent history.

Chelsea, Division 2 state champions in 2002 and 2003, would like to get that title back.

Not much was settled on Thursday, however, when the teams split a doubleheader. Tecumseh won the first game, 4-2, and Chelsea responded with a 9-3 win in the second game.

"I told the kids I wanted to beat them twice, but I'll take a split," admitted Chelsea coach Bob Moffett.

In the opener, the Bulldogs trailed 4-0 before scoring a pair of runs in the sixth inning to tighten the gap. But that was as close as they would get.

Kaylie Dixon and Shelby Platt had Chelsea's RBIs and Ellie Stoffer had a pair of doubles in the first game.

It was a two-out, two-run Stoffer triple that blew open the second game. Chelsea led 5-3 heading into the sixth before Stoffer kick-started a four-run inning that assured the Bulldogs of their first win over Tecumseh since 2004.

"Stoffer's triple was huge," Moffett said. "Breaking it open in the sixth inning was big for us."

Sara Dixon added a two-run triple and Taylor Hansen went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the second game. Hansen also earned the win on the mound, throwing a complete game with six strikeouts.

"Starting out scoring some runs right away was the big thing," said Moffett, whose team took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. "I think they started to believe in themselves a little bit."

Notching the win was Rachel Mann, who threw a one-hitter with four strikeouts. "It was a good couple of games, we were patient at the plate," said Pioneer coach Elissa Brode.
