Greenhills field hockey takes down new Division 2 rival Saline; Pioneer volleyball tops Skyline and more Tuesday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Saline High School field hockey team hadn't played Ann Arbor Greenhills School since 2007, the first year of the Hornets' program, in an inter-divisional game. The Gryphons won 2-0 against their then Division 3 opponent.

Tuesday, the teams played again, this time both as Division 2 teams, but the result wasn't much different -- Greenhills scored the only goal for a 1-0 home win.

The first half was scoreless, and it wasn't until six minutes remained in the game when Greenhills' Marissa Thompson scored after a scrum in front of the net following a penalty corner.

But after the Gryphons (3-1-1) took the lead, it wasn't an easy ending. Saline (2-2) managed to get several shots on goal before the game was over.

"We had to defend some penalty shots in the final three minutes," Gryphons coach Tom Weinfurther said. "After we scored, they pressured us pretty well. We made some simple mistakes that brought them down to our end."

Maya Price and Sierra Patton combined for a shutout, blocking five shots in net for Greenhills.
