Washtenaw Christian volleyball sweeps Calvary Christian in Class D districts opener

By Kaleb Roedel

Both high school volleyball teams looked nearly identical as they took the court, clad in black shorts and red jerseys striped white on the shoulders.

Once play started, however, Washtenaw Christian Academy and Calvary Christian Academy were stark contrasts of one another.

Washtenaw Christian served out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and never looked back in its 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-19, and 25-16) over Calvary Christian in round one of the Class D districts Tuesday in Saline. The Wildcats will host Rudolf Steiner in the district finals Friday at 7 p.m.

“Serving was a huge key for us. We got a lot of aces and not very many errors,” said Washtenaw Christian coach Carly Day, whose team compiled over 20 aces. “They were aggressive. They hit their zones. And then we just played really good defense.”

Kayla Taylor laid the groundwork with a pair of aces to push the Wildcats out front 6-0 in the opening set.

“That just set the tone for us, and we kind of built off that,” said Daly. “I feel like when we get an ace within the first five to eight points it definitely carries our momentum.”

Meanwhile, the Cougars struggled to counter, emulated by two Calvary Christian players watching a point land between each other as the Wildcats went up 9-2.
