Jannicka Martinsen and Toni Barnett's careers have been microcosms of the Milan High School girls tennis program. Members of Milan's first team in 2008, Barnett and Martinson, like the program, entered the season winless.

It was only fitting that the No. 2 doubles team registered its first career win (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) as the Big Reds defeated Lincoln for the first win in program history.

"It's their third season on the team and first time they won a match and for it to be and for the team to win as well that was nice," said Milan coach Nathan Rodriguez.

Five Milan (1-3) seniors, including Martinson and Barnett, have been on the team since the very beginning.

"This was special," Rodriguez said. "They've been with me since the very beginning and I didn't need to tell them to get pumped, they were already there."

The matches were closer than the final team score indicates. Four of the flights went three sets and another two included a 7-5 set.

"We stayed focused and that was our goal, to get out there and play mistake free tennis," Rodriguez said. "I was pretty happy with the way everyone played."

Kelsey Phillips picked up Lincoln's lone win in No. 4 doubles. (Boxscore)

MORE GIRLS TENNIS Father Gabriel Richard 4, Bloomfield Hills Sacred Heart 4: The teams were fit to be tied as the Fighting Irish won three singles flights, and Sacred Heart did the same in doubles. The most highly contested match came in No. 4 doubles where Sacred Heart's Hannah Forte and Maureen O'Brien defeated Jill Clancy and Noelle Kirchmer 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Richard's Kelsey Geppner continued her assault of the singles flight with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. (Boxscore)

Chelsea 8, Ypsilanti 0: The Bulldogs won in straight sets in all but the No. 3 singles flight where Elspeth Pennell defeated Brittany Bargert 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Chelsea's No. 4 doubles team of Ellen Christie and Lauren Barbour got its first win of the season and the No. 3 doubles team of Amanda Robertson and Brandy Alexander extended its undefeated streak and are now 5-0 on the season. Monroe 6, Skyline 2: Megan Smith notched a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, giving the Eagles their lone singles victory in a home loss to the Trojans. "Megan Smith played great, her best tennis of the season so far," said Skyline (3-3, 0-1) coach Sean McBrady, adding, "Close matches on every court made it a terrific match despite a few rain delays." Earning the Eagles' doubles win were Emily Harju and Kimberly Aldworth in the No. 4 bout. (Boxscore)

BOYS GOLF Pioneer 148, Skyline 176: Davis Ransdell shot a one-under par 35, leading the Pioneers over the Eagles in an intra-city showdown on the Lake Forest Front 9. "He (Ransdell) reached both par 5s in two and had birdie opportunities all day," said Pioneer coach Brian Miller. "This is his second straight 35 in our first two conference meets." Eric Miller and Nolan Maezes were next in line with 37s for Pioneer, while Zach Averill rounded out the scoring with a 39. Skyline was led by Ian Duvall and and Josh Bourque's 43s. (Results)

Huron 160, Monroe 177: All four varsity scorers and eight JV players shot a 43 or better at Ann Arbor's Leslie Park for the River Rats (3-0, 3-0 SEC). "It was a tough putting course today, the greens were a bit slow, but overall I'm pleased," said Huron coach Dee Drake. Alex Wunderlich shot an even-par 36 for the low round of the day and teammate Rob Aldrich joined him with the only other sub-40 round of the day (39). Jordan Hohman scored Monroe's low round with a 43. (Results)

Temperance-Bedford 148, Saline 164: Jackson Lambert's four-over 40 was Saline's low round, while Luke Berger's 40 was Bedford's high score. Nate Gonring shot the low round of the day with a one-under 35 at The Legacy in Blissfield and David Genaw shot a 36 as Saline (2-1, 2-1 SEC) dropped its first league contest. (Results) Tecumseh 157, Chelsea 169: Mason Wagner three-putt the ninth hole to just miss shooting an even-par at Tecumseh Country Club. "He's playing as if that's going to be more of a standard than a one time thing," said Chelsea (1-2, 1-2 SEC) coach Joe Ewald. While Wagner had the low round of the day, the next four low scorers belonged to the Indians. Joe Forest was Tecumseh's low scorer with a 38. (Results)

GIRLS TRACK Huron 91, Temperance Bedford 47: In her first two-mile run, Anna Naiki clocked in a winning time of 13 minutes, 26.6 seconds, helping the host River Rats top the Kicking Mules. "Anna's great. She has a great attitude and is easy to coach. We're missing a regular running at that distance and Naiki stepped up," said Huron (1-1, 1-1) coach Keri Kirk. The Rats won 12 of 17 events, led by two individual wins from Maya Long in the 200 (26.5 seconds) and 400 (:50.5) meter dashes. (Results)

BOYS TRACK Huron 78.5, Temperance Bedford 58.5: The River Rats' 4x100 meter relay (Mike Denson, Kabine Diane, David Edwards, Marcus Finney) registered a season-best 44.1 seconds finish to help Huron edge the Kicking Mules. "We're just improving, it was a good meet for the kids to run in and compete in good conditions," said Huron coach Lee Arthur, whose team won 10 of 17 events. Stephen Thompson led in individual wins with two, taking the long jump (19 feet, 2 inches) and high jump (5-6). Huron's Ben Royce tied Thompson for first in the high jump. (Results)

GIRLS SOCCER Milan 1, St. Mary Catholic Central 1: Erin Jinna's save on a Catholic Central penalty kick with four minutes left in the first half helped the Big Reds preserve a 1-1 tie at home. Olivia Schrock, a typical starter who came off the bench Wednesday, scored Milan's lone goal 30 minutes into the first half off an assist from Maggie Williams. "Schrock was feeling sick and that's why she didn't start. She was in the game for less than a minute when she scored," noted Milan (2-1-1, 2-0-1) coach Leah McGrath. (Boxscore)
