Skyline softball rallies past Father Gabriel Richard in seventh for first win; Jake Johnson throws perfect game for Milan baseball and more Wednesday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Skyline has only played a handful of varsity games in its young history, and not surprisingly, had lost every one prior to Wednesday night.

After dropping its opening game to Father Gabriel Richard 18-6, it appeared the Eagles' win column would remain empty as they headed into the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap trailing 10-6.

Capped by a four-run two-out rally, Skyline pulled off its first-ever varsity win in improbable fashion.

"I was most happy in the fact that we didn't play our best in the first game or to that point in the second, but we absolutely knew we could do it and we stayed in it," said Skyline coach Stephanie Coleman.

After leading off the seventh with a groundout, Grace Pritula reached base on an error and advanced to third after a Hannah Steinberg single. Hunter Sites grounded out on the next at-bat, but Pritula was able to score.

Tyler Marone, who was 3-for-4 with a triple four runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap, drove in Steinberg with a single and then the Fighting Irish started helping out the Eagles as Marone, Courtney Deitzen (pinch running for Allison Young) and Kianna Spivey all scored on passed balls.

Gabriel Richard committed two errors, allowed three passed balls, walked a batter and had a hit-by-pitch in the seventh inning. Natalie Kene was the winning pitcher for Skyline in 2/3 of an inning of relief work. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)

MORE SOFTBALL Blissfield 7, Saline 3: Kristina Zalewski went 3-for-3 with a run scored, but it wasn't enough in the Hornets' home loss. "The key for us is getting runners on base and moving them around, and we're just not getting enough people on base," said Saline (3-5, 0-1) coach Alicia Seegert, whose team trailed 6-0 before scoring three runs in the fifth. Amy Jedele went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Saline. (Boxscore)

Willow Run 22, River Rouge 0: Katie Mullins struck out six in three innings of work and only surrendered a single hit. Emalee McCurdy went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and six RBIs, Caitlyn Easterday went 1-for-1 with a home run and three RBIs, and Kayla Warden was 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and three RBIs. "We just work on our fundamentals and are getting better every day," said Willow Run (9-1) coach Duane Edwards. (Boxscore)

Napoleon 18, Manchester 13; Manchester 14, Napoleon 3: Manchester failed to score in the final three innings of the first game and the Pirates brought in five runs in the top of the seventh to break a 13-13 tie. Manchester's offense didn't need to score in the final innings of the nightcap as the game was called due to mercy after the fifth. Taylor Gage was the winning pitcher for the Pirates in Game 1 and Jenny Stautz won Game 2. Nicole Jackson led Manchester with eight hits and two RBIs on the night. Sand Creek 10, Whitmore Lake 0: Michaela Robichaud hit a base-clearing triple to end the game in the bottom of the sixth as Whitmore Lake (1-5, 0-1) dropped its first Tri-County Conference game. The Trojans had just three runners in the contest, only one of which reached scoring position, and committed seven errors in the field. (Boxscore)

BASEBALL Milan 17, Grosse Ile 0; Milan 14, Grosse Ile 0: Jake Johnson struck out Grosse Ile's first batter in game one and never looked back, finishing with a perfect game to initiate the Big Reds' home sweep. Johnson threw seven strikeouts in the three-inning, mercy ruled affair. Milan combined for 26 hits on the day, led by Brandyon Osborne, who finished with five hits and five RBIs. Chaz Poindexter earned the win in the five-inning game two, allowing one hit with six strikeouts. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)

Napoleon 6, Manchester 4; Manchester 8, Napoleon 4: Josh Bammer recorded four strikeouts in a winning effort for the Pirates (4-2) in Game 1 and Derrick Neves had two RBIs. Brent Schriber picked up the win in the nightcap for Manchester (5-6) while Logan Zigila and Brandon Casey each had a pair of hits. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)

Clinton 4, Ottawa Lake Whiteford 2: Despite committing five errors and stranding a bevy of runners, the Redskins escaped with a road win. "We didn't play that crisply, but we played well enough to get the win," said Clinton (6-3, 1-0) coach Jim Roberts, whose team was led by Stephen Coolley's two doubles. Jesse Sexton, Craig Hayden and Rylie Robinson added two hits apiece. Robinson earned the complete game-victory with 12 strikeouts. (Boxscore)
