Wrapping up a wild Wednesday of high school sports

By Rich Rezler

Wednesday night's high school sports schedule was as frantic as the Huron boys basketball team's full-court trapping press.

AnnArbor.com reporters were spread throughout southeastern Michigan to bring you coverage of Washtenaw County teams in MHSAA hockey and basketball tournament play.

You can find our stories in the files below, or check out a quick recap after the jump that will link you directly to everything you need to know.

HOCKEY Chelsea advanced to the semifinal round for the first time in school history with a 4-3 win over Riverview Gabriel Richard in Allen Park. The Bulldogs, who'd already recorded a pair of nail-biting 4-3 wins during the postseason, did it again by scoring three straight goals in the third period.

Huron wasn't quite as fortunate in their Division 1 quarterfinal against Detroit Catholic Central. The state's No. 1-ranked team outshot the River Rats 70-6 in an 8-0 win at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

BASKETBALL Class A at Huron: Southeastern Conference rivals Huron and Dexter will meet in Friday's district title game after both easily handled Kensington Lakes Activities Association foes in semifinals on Wednesday night. Dexter's inside-outside combination of Dave LaMore (21 points) and Stefan Elslager (19 points) led the Dreadnaughts to a 66-42 win over Pinckney. Huron's 69-36 win over South Lyon was over before fans could snack on a halftime hot dog.

Class A at Saline: Lincoln trailed by one point at halftime, but dominated the second half of a 75-58 win over Temperance Bedford. The Railsplitters will play Adrian - a team they split with in the regular season - in a title game.

Class A at Wayne Memorial: Ypsilanti missed its first 12 shots and finished an uncharacteristic 23-percent from the field during a 61-43 semifinal loss to Inkster.

Class B at Chelsea: The host Bulldogs never trailed while beating Willow Run 71-63. They advance to play Milan in a district final after the Big Reds topped Skyline 55-42.

Class C at Manchester: Whitmore Lake led Clinton by a point after three quarters, but the Redskins took over at that point and won 101-88. They'll meet Napoleon, which used its size advantage in a 59-42 win over Greenhills.

Class D at Washtenaw Christian: Washtenaw Christian beat Calvary Christian and Plymouth Christian topped Central Academy to set up their Friday night championship game.
