Ypsilanti, Gabriel Richard, Manchester and Central Academy win boys basketball district titles

By AnnArbor.com Staff

After averaging 76 points in its first two district tournament wins, it looked like the Ypsilanti High School basketball team was on its way to another high-scoring affair Friday night.

Things bogged down after the first quarter, but the 22-1 Phoenix proved they can win ugly ones, too.

Ypsilanti's 55-30 win over Class A tournament host Monroe wasn't quite the thing of beauty Wednesday's 85-40 rout of Temperance Bedford was. But it did the job. It earned the Phoenix their first district title since 2006.

Tristan Simmons scored 15 of his 22 points in the first quarter and the Phoenix raced out to a 23-14 lead. Simmons made five baskets, including two 3-pointers, and got to the free-throw line during his inspired first quarter of play.

"He mixed it up," Brooks said. "He really played with a lot of passion."

But that's when the game hit the brakes. Ypsilanti struggled to score while Monroe employed a box-and-one defense on Simmons and the Trojans (9-12) couldn't find the bottom of the basket themselves.

In fact, Monroe was held scoreless for the entire second quarter while Ypsilanti built a 31-14 halftime lead. The Phoenix, ranked No. 9 in Class A, would cruise from there.

Father Gabriel Richard 56, Milan 36 Gabriel Richard took its lumps this season. On Friday night, it started to pay off.

The small Class B school wrapped a difficult non-conference schedule around its league games against the Class A schools in the Catholic High School League's highest division.

"It's sort of vindication for putting ourselves out there," Fighting Irish coach Pete Schoch said after a win at Onsted High School gave his team its fourth district title in five seasons.

"We played with the single purpose of getting this district win. It's been a difficult season for them, playing such a hard schedule. But it really benefited us and helped us to win."

Sophomore guard Myles Lockridge hit four 3-point baskets in the first half on his way to a game-high 17 points. Those baskets also helped Gabriel Richard take control early. They led 32-19 at halftime.

Manchester 29, Napoleon 26 Manchester boys basketball team started district play with a 6-14 record. They ended it as champions. The Flying Dutchmen upset their Class C tournament hosts, earning their first district trophy since 2004 and the sixth in school history.

Sure, Napoleon (18-5) had a terrible shooting night. The Pirates made just 10 field goals and went 3 of 21 on 3-pointers, including two misses in the final 8 seconds.

But Manchester coach Brad Gerbe says his team will take some of the credit for that, thank you very much.

"We switched defenses all over the places. We really did a phenomenal job," Gerbe said. "My coaching staff and the kids, they were phenomenal. We were the reason they shot a low percentage. I think my kids played hard. I'm really proud and excited for them."

Central Academy 69, Washtenaw Christian 37 Central Academy made school history and the school community turned out to help them celebrate.

Falcons coach Rushdi Issa said more than 300 supporters of the small public school academy made the trip to watch the team hoist its first Class D district tournament trophy after the win at Washtenaw Christian.

"It meant a lot to our school. We've been working for this for the last 11 years and this is the first time for us," Issa said. The school opened in 1997 and added varsity athletics several years later.

Omar Hasan led Central Academy (16-3) with 24 points, including four 3-point baskets. The Falcons had a comfortable 37-19 lead by halftime.
