Saline players have strong showing at junior City Tennis Tournament; Cohen prevails in 18 singles and doubles

By Josh Coudret

Megan Geiger and Darby Molloy have played a lot of tennis together, but never against each other in a tournament.

Last season, they played No. 2 and No. 4 doubles, respectively, for Saline High School. On Friday, they played as opponents for the girls 16-18 championship in the Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament at the U-M Varsity Tennis Center.

Geiger, who graduated this year, defeated Molloy, 6-2, 6-1.

“Last year I had to play against Shanna Cooper (in the final), and she was also from Saline,” Geiger said. “So I had to play two teammates in a row. It’s a little bit tougher, because you never want to be really competitive. I’m competitive with my teammates in a way. Everyone’s competitive on the team, so it’s just another match.”

Geiger and Molloy weren’t the only Hornets who found success Friday. Will Heider, who played No. 2 doubles last season on the boys varsity team, was the champion in the boys 16 singles draw.

Heider won the first set of the final match, 6-3, before his opponent, Ben Froelich, retired.

“I wasn’t really hitting the ball as solid as I would have liked,” Heider said. “But it was good enough to win, I guess.”

Though Heider was glad he won, he was there more for the fun of the tournament.

“You get to play at the Varsity Tennis Center, which is obviously a good thing,” he said. “And some of the competition is very nice. It’s just a good tournament.”

Though Froelich retired from the match, he played in a 16-18 doubles match with his partner and teammate from Greenhills School, A.J. Gay, about an hour later.

Froelich and Gay lost in that semifinal match, 7-6, 4-6, 10-6, to Akihiro Ota and Aaron Brodkey.

Brodkey and Ota reached the championship, where they lost to Huron High School graduates Ethan Cohen and Peter Godfrey, 6-0, 6-3.

Godfrey and Cohen, who played on the same doubles team for one season in high school, were the No. 1 seed. Their experience showed against their younger opponents.

Brodkey’s big serve won his team some key points, and Ota’s consistent and accurate ground strokes also helped them earn three games. But Cohen and Godfrey won using hard serves, fast ground strokes and consistent volleys to put away points.

Earlier in the day, Cohen wrapped up the boys 18 singles title, beating Edward Kielb, 6-2, 6-2.

After the first set was tied at two, Cohen began serving and volleying, using variety to dig into the match. He didn’t drop a set in the tournament.

Michiko Ota, Akihiro Ota’s younger sister, defeated Alyssa Roopas, 6-0, 6-1, for the girls 12-14 championship trophy.

Michiko Ota also went to the finals of the girls doubles draw with her partner, Laura Hanselman. The pair fell 6-2, 6-1, to Lindsay Franson and Carly Glahn, who both played singles last season at Dexter High School.
