Huron High School grad Ali Oatley chases record; Eastern Michigan's Chelsea Detrick MAC player of the week
Huron High School graduate Ali Oatley scored the Albion College women's soccer team’s only goal in a 1-0 victory at Alma on Saturday. Oatley, a senior, leads the Britons in scoring and three of her four goals served as game-winners.
“I call her our workhorse,” said Albion coach Lisa Roscheck. “Her work ethic combined with speed and foot skills has been an asset for us every year since she’s been here.”
Oatley is a three-time All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection, and would be just the third player in the program’s history to make it four should she be selected again this fall. She seems well on her way, with a conference player of the week honor already to her name.
With 42 career goals, Oatley is six shy of the Britons' all-time mark with six guaranteed games left on the schedule. Adding more to the games total in the form of an extensive playoff run is more important to Oatley than the goals total, according to Roscheck.
“I think every player always wants their best season to be their senior season, and last year was disappointing for the team and for her too,” said Roscheck. “During our off-season she really has put herself in a leadership position.
“In the past, she has always worked hard to contribute the most that she can as an individual and now she has been a lot more vocal, and a lot more demanding of those around her.”
The road ahead will not be an easy one, with the remainder of Albion’s games coming against conference opponents.
“All the coaches and all the players know about her, so most games marked a little tighter,” said Roscheck. “So far she’s responded well. She just has to stay positive, and focused and just has to know people will be gunning for her.”
