Images from Michigan hockey's first ever loss to the U.S. Under-18 team

By Joseph Tobianski

The United States National Team Development Program Under-18 team defeated the Michigan hockey team 5-3 at Yost Ice Arena in an exhibition matchup on Friday night. It was the Wolverine's first ever loss to the development program team. Michigan commit Tyler Motte scored two of Team USA's goals, both on the power play.

Jon Merrill returned to the ice for the Wolverines in a limited capacity on Friday, playing exclusively on the power player, of which Michigan was 0-for-3 on. Merrill has been out since October after cracking a vertebrae prior to the season beginning. He was not cleared to play until earlier in the day on Friday.

The score is not an indication of the game as UM was totally dominated. It could easily have been 8 or 9 to 1. The second period probably ranks among the worst in the history of the UM program (when Team USA had more great scoring chances than Michigan had passes).

This wasn't a fluke at all. USA beat us pretty easily. We couldn't get the puck out of our zone pretty much the entire game. I'm getting scared to go to Tuesday nights game against Bowling Green..

This is like Michigan football losing to a MAC team; humiliating to say the least. Needs repeating, new leadership at the top is the remedy for this program. I hope the HC gets the gut feeling to enjoy retirement come next season. He's earned it and I do have a lot of respect and appreciation for what he's accomplished but the best days are now behind him.

It's more like UM Football loosing to the MAC All-Star team. These under 18 kids are as good or better than most collegiate players, they just aren't old enough yet.

Engineer: Would be willing to bet that new blood could do as well or better in recruiting. Yes, he can stay as long as he wants but I think he should go before things get worse.

I would not write Red off so fast. College sports always has kids coming and going and Red has definately been elite in what he has been able to do here. I think when he leaves we will see a drop off more than we like. I say let him stay as long as he wants. He rocks!
