Images from the 2012 University of Michigan 'Mud Bowl'

By Courtney Sacco

The Michigan football team's 38-31 overtime win over Northwestern on Saturday wasn't the only game in town. It was also the day of one of the longest standing Greek life traditions on the University of Michigan campus: the Mud Bowl. The 2012 Mud Bowl pitted SAE vs. FIJI. Participants enjoyed he unseasonably warm weather, and a 30-12 SAE victory.

SAE is not a frat at the University of Michigan, having been expelled last year after having been on suspension. SAE chapters at other schools have been similarly expelled - Indiana, Cornell, ... The reason I bring this up is that SAE is not part of Greek life at Michigan any longer, is it?

So we get pictures of frat boys playing in the mud in the sports section, but not a single word so far this basketball season about the Michigan women (they're 2-0), EMU men (they're 1-1) or EMU women (they're 1-0)? I guess I wasn't too surprised that I couldn't find the result of the Michigan vs. Michigan State Big Ten soccer title game here (found it on mgoblue.com), but you guys at least reported on all of the local basketball teams last season.

Section, we were not planning on shooting the mud bowl but Courtney happened to be in the area and grabbed some shots to share. We're still early in the basketball season and will be diving into it a bit more as football finishes up here at the end of the month.

Back in the 60's, as I recall, the women from two sororities played tag football during the halftime.

I'm not sure if it is still the case, but I know in 2010 the national chapter of one of the sororities involved barred its members from participating in the Mud Bowl for insurance purposes. Don't know if it is related, but I know a girl from Alpha Phi who broke her leg playing in that game in 2008.

Courtney......didn't the Michigan women use to play a mud bowl game as well, obvious on another day with another cause ?
