In absence of last year's champ, new pair claims Ann Arbor City mixed doubles title

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Sven Holcomb, a native of Australia, has not lost in a city tournament since he moved to Ann Arbor in 2008. Last summer, he scored a trifecta by winning the open singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles.

On Sunday, in the semifinals of the open doubles division, Holcomb's partner, Adzic Marijana suffered an Achilles' heel injury, forcing the team to withdraw from the tournament.

Holcomb's absence opened the door for a mixed doubles final that pitted teachers against students - Betsey and Craig Capelli, pros at the Chippewa Tennis Club, faced college students Stephan Hanselman and Emily Chiao.

Despite lacking the power of their youthful counterparts, the finals proved the students still have room to learn. The Capellis won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The Capellis had advanced to the finals by defeating Leigh Formicola and Stefan Welch in their semifinal, a match of interest to Hanselman because it involved two of his former coaches.

"Stefan coached me for four years at Huron High School, and Craig coached me at Chippewa since I was young," Hanselman said.
