Kansas the new No. 1 in AP Top 25, AnnArbor.com's Michael Rothstein keeps Ohio State at top of his ballot

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Kansas is the new No. 1 team in The Associated Press' college basketball poll, moving up a spot after Ohio State lost at Wisconsin on Saturday.

The Buckeyes, who had been No. 1 for four weeks, retained 14 first-place votes from the 65-member national media -- including Michael Rothstein of AnnArbor.com.

Rothstein's complete ballot, and some additional thoughts, follow:

Michael Rothstein's ballot (With last week's ranking in parenthesis)

1. Ohio State (1) 2. Pittsburgh (5) 3. Texas (2) 4. Kansas (3) 5. Notre Dame (4) 6. BYU (6) 7. San Diego State (7) 8. Duke (8) 9. Wisconsin (13) 10. Georgetown (10) 11. Louisville (12) 12. Purdue  (15) 13. Connecticut (9) 14. Florida (16) 15. Arizona (17) 16. Vanderbilt (NR) 17. Villanova (11) 18. North Carolina (21) 19. Kentucky (18) 20. Missouri (20) 21. Texas A&M (23) 22. Syracuse (14) 23. St. John’s (NR) 24. St. Mary’s (NR) 25. Belmont (25)

Dropped out: No. 19 Utah State, No. 22 West Virginia, No. 24 Temple.

Michael Rothstein’s take: Ohio State lost at Wisconsin on Saturday, but the nation’s last undefeated team remained atop my ballot. The Buckeyes have been dominant for most of the season, have played extremely well and were on the road in a place that, frankly, no one wins at.

Overall, there wasn’t much major shifting in this week’s poll. Wisconsin moved into the top 10, replacing Connecticut, which fell to 13th. Three teams moved in, led by Vanderbilt at No. 16, and three teams moved out, including Utah State, which had been at No. 19.

The team most in trouble in the poll is Syracuse, which lost twice last week and has dropped six of its last eight games and is now a middle of the pack team in the nation’s best league, the Big East.

I agree with Rothstein on this one. Knee-jerk reactions and my distaste for TSIO aside, it's probably a coin flip, but TSIO does play in a better conference than Kansas does. That would be the "tie-breaker" for me.
