Manchester at Monroe St. Mary: "It'll be a mess"

By Rich Rezler

The one surviving Washtenaw County high school football team has its itinerary.

Kickoff for Manchester High School's Division 6 regional championship game against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central has been set for 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Navarre Field, the MHSAA announced Monday.

For the Flying Dutchmen, who played their first two playoff games on artificial surface at Saline High School and Adrian College, it’s a return to a natural field ... during the time of year when there’s little grass left behind.

Count Manchester head coach Wes Gall (right) among those who aren’t thrilled with the location.

“I wish they would condemn it,” Gall said following his team’s 11-0 win over Clinton last Friday. “It’s dark. It’s muddy. It’s a mess.”

Heck, it's even haunted! Or so claims Monroe Paranormal.

Of course, Gall said, Manchester’s own grass fields offer his team a perfect place to prepare.

“We’re going to go practice on our practice field, which is a mess. And our game field, which is a mess,” Gall said. “We’ll to try and get ready for it, but it’ll be a mess.”

That is exactly why this venue is such a great home field advantage for Monroe St. Mary's at this point in the playoffs... With their dark green uniforms, muddy field, very low lighting, and deceptive wing T traps and counters... This place is like playing in a mausoleum!...
