Michigan basketball guard Manny Harris nicked up

By Michael Rothstein

His teammates scrimmaged for almost 40 minutes early Saturday afternoon and Michigan junior guard Manny Harris took part in none of it.

Sidelined with a pulled hamstring, Harris instead worked on shooting jumpers - something that has been going on since Michigan practice started a week ago. Michigan coach John Beilein has chosen to keep Harris out of full-court drills, perhaps until his team’s off day Thursday.

“It’s just tight enough right now where we try to keep him out of full court play and, hopefully, we have another workout tomorrow and we’ll see how it is,” Beilein said. “Up until media day, the tough choice will be do we do anything with him before the day off next week when we have media day.”

Having Harris injured isn’t a great thing, although Beilein is seeing some benefits. It is forcing other Michigan players to learn how to do more and embrace new roles.

Harris, though, looked sharp with his shot Saturday, consistently making long-range jump shots.

“I think it’ll make everyone else better,” Beilein said. “And then when we’re healthy, we’ll be even better than that.”

Running the point Michigan’s biggest on-court question this season revolves around ball-handling - a spot where the Wolverines struggled last year with no true point guards.

Now, that isn’t an issue. Freshman Darius Morris has impressed Beilein during his first week of practice and ran a bunch with the first group.

So, too, did sophomores Laval Lucas-Perry and Stu Douglass. Neither, though, are true point guards like Morris.

“It’s going to be interesting,” Beilein said. “We see Darius Morris has certainly made an impression already. He is, he wants to play defense, which is really important at that position.”

Morgan is close Freshman Jordan Morgan, who had off-season surgery on his left knee, has been practicing, and Beilein said he is close to being cleared to go full speed in practice.

The Detroit native, though, missed almost all of the individual workouts before the season.

“When you’re dormant for that long, it is really difficult to get back into it,” Beilein said. “Our biggest thing right now is getting the healthy guys ready to play. Once things settle down after one more week, hopefully he’ll be cleared very soon to go all-out and then we’ll be able to really work him but I think we’ll need extra sessions to help him catch up.”

Redshirting could be a possibility for Morgan, as Beilein said he’ll discuss redshirt options with all of his freshmen before the beginning of the regular season.

This and that Beilein said he was impressed the first week with both Morris and freshman guard Matt Vogrich. … Cody Zeller, the younger brother of North Carolina forward Tyler Zeller and former Notre Dame center Luke Zeller, was on campus for an unofficial visit. 2010 verbal commit Evan Smotrycz was also on campus along with 2010 recruit Trey Ziegler.
